It's full of peeling paint and forgotten games.
If abandoned homes and clowns both give you the spooks, mentally prepare yourself: A circus-themed house was once left behind in Upstate New York.
Photographer Bryan Sansivero captured the home before it was sold and renovated, and the neglected scenes are chilling.
Sansivero—whose newly released book, American Decay: Inside America's Forgotten Homes, features run-down homes across the country—photographed the deserted home in the Catskills region of New York several times a few summers ago.
“The house was for sale at some point, but the realtor sign was knocked down,” Sansivero tells House Beautiful.
“When I went inside, there was a sign-in sheet for every time the realtor was there, and the last time it was signed was in 2017.”
He estimates that the home had been abandoned for about a year before he explored it.
Inside, each room seems to be covered in bright, peeling paint or wallpaper.
One room looks like it was inspired by a circus tent, with a red-and-yellow striped pattern on the ceiling.
A few circus-related items were left behind, including a colorful umbrella and a game of croquet.
Oh, and even the staircase featured a striped rope—presumably used as a railing or fun decor.
The home wasn’t the only abandoned one on the property.
It had about four in total, one of which Sansivero believes may have been a winery due to leftover wine bottles, wine storage containers, and a fenced-off area of the land that had grapes.
Who inhabited the vibrant, circus-themed home, though? It’s unclear.
“I don't know much about the history of the people who left the house,” Sansivero says.
“Some people claim that it was a family of circus performers, but I think it was someone eccentric who loved to decorate.”
