Persbericht ECA:

19 January 2010
Communication about Animals in the Circus Arts

During the 34th International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo, the European Circus Association (ECA) organized its Symposium for the 8th time. On 15 and 16 January 2010, the members from many EU states discussed about the topic “Communicating about animals in the circus arts”.

In a keynote presentation, the English scientist Dr Marthe Kiley-Worthington underlined that in her opinion circuses with animals have a future if they do some rethinking. The animals should be given even more enrichment activities and the audience must get more information. It is important to focus upon the interaction between man and animal. The circus has an enormous chance to be the ambassador of the animals and to convey this idea to the public. In an open and lively discussion, animal trainers, PR experts and Dr. Kiley-Worthington exchanged their various experiences with animals in the circus.

Media-trainer Jeff Jouett (USA) introduced various strategies to successfully communicate with the media, government officials, politicians and the public about the positive role of animals in the classical circus. In a training situation with animal trainers and circus specialists, he suggested some important key messages:
1) Circus animals are well-loved and well-cared for.
2) Circus animals are trained with affection and respect.
3) Circus animals inspire and educate.
4) Public support for circus animals and circus culture is overwhelming.

In a role-playing session, PR and communications strategist Rodney Huey (USA) acted as a reporter conducting a “live interview.” The audience was asked to evaluate the answers given by some participants.

Many exhibitors had registered for the Circus Business Exhibition, among them leading manufacturers of circus tents, seating facilities and masts, printers, a costume designer etc.

For the Silent Auction, circuses, collectors and organizations had donated many historical items.

The European Circus Association represents the European circuses towards authorities and the general public. The ECA seeks to promote circus art and culture and to protect this important part of our common cultural heritage. ECA President Urs Pilz also serves as vice-president and artistic director of the International Circus Festival in Monte-Carlo. Nearly all renowned European circuses are members of the ECA.
